"Thank you for calling...., My name is Michael, how may I help you today?
That has been my opening spiel for the last 12 years in a BPO company I used to work for.
Yes, 12 long years of graveyard shift, stress, fatigue yet so rewarding career. But the best treasures I have acquired with those years are my friends who have eventually become a family to me...That for me, is priceless.
WHY I CHANGED CAREER?
There are actually to main reasons why I have decided to switch career:
First, I just realized that I have been working for a long time but it seems that I have not reached that stage yet of financial security. Yes I have a good job, small investment, a great HMO coverage and insurance from my company. But those benefits are just temporary. The moment I terminate my employment, I would lose those completely. That was an eye opener for me. So I had myself educated financially by attending Financial seminars and doing some research on Financial literacy and I found out that there are proper ways of building wealth that I can apply so I can achieve my goals to become financially independent.
Secondly, An opportunity came to learn more about Financial literacy and planning to make it as a career at the same time. In other words, It is like hitting two birds in one stone. And I knew then that this what I want to get into ---Getting compensated for something that I love doing.
MY FRUSTRATION
When I was still working in call center, I had witnessed a lot of agents living from pay check to pay check and most of them wanting to get out of the rat race. Unfortunately they did not know how...
I knew what the problem was. They just know how to spend their hard-earned money but they do not know how to save and invest. They lack financial literacy. And that is the bottom line.
This issue needs to be addressed. Call center workers need people to educate and guide them towards financial Security. Otherwise, they may end up retiring as poor as rat. Call center jobs may not be there forever due to technological advancements. Call center agents are being replaced now by AMELIA, a virtual agent that could drastically expand the capabilities of the average customer care agent.
MY ADVOCACY
Now that I am with Sunlife Financials, I am joining a company with the same advocacy as mine-----To spread Financial literacy to every Filipino to ensure that every family lives a decent life, that every child goes to a reputable school and every Filipino retires enjoying the fruits of his labor and spends the rest of his life comfortably.
It may not be an overnight success but I am positive that through the collective effort of the call center and Financial industries, we can make a difference in every Filipino family.
